Global Nature Watch is launching the new Land GHG Monitoring System, a geospatial system that maps greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals by the world’s land globally and at a high resolution for the first time.  

Land plays a critical role in climate change, acting as both a major source of GHG emissions and an important contributor to removals, yet our ability to monitor these fluxes in specific places has remained limited.  

The Land GHG Monitoring System brings together five complementary datasets — cropland management emissions, livestock emissions, emissions from organic soil, carbon stock change in mineral soil, and vegetation carbon fluxes — each combining satellite observations with extensive ground data, while following the standards used for national GHG accounting systems. This data is available and easier to work with than ever before using Global Nature Watch’s AI-powered Horizon platform, which allows anyone to explore insights backed by maps, statistics and context.  

The event will introduce the monitoring system and discuss applications for users and decision makers to help them make more climate-smart land-use decisions, strengthen GHG reporting and target action where it counts.
