Food Loss and Waste for Climate and People

Food loss and waste is responsible for an estimated 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, while around 30% of all food produced is never harvested, sold or consumed. Beyond its climate impact, FLW contributes to environmental degradation and economic losses. Reducing FLW can strengthen food and nutrition security, create jobs and support more resilient and sustainable livelihoods.

Many of the solutions already exist. By reducing food loss and waste, countries can make better use of resources, strengthen food systems and advance a more circular economy that is less dependent on imported food and agricultural inputs.

At the Africa Food Systems Forum, IKEA Foundation and partners will share lessons from supporting innovation, policy and investment to reduce FLW and call on other funders to increase investment in this critical area.
