The growing recognition of just transition in new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) demonstrates that it is now central to climate policy and underscores that impacts on people, society and the economy are critical for securing the social license for climate action. It confirms that the way countries make the transition matters, and that they should strive to green their economies through pathways and approaches that reinforce equity and inclusivity while creating socio-economic development opportunities for all. This trend from countries' NDCs reinforces ongoing conversations under the UNFCCC, including the COP30 outcome where Parties agreed to continue the Just Transition Work Programme as a multi-year process and, for the first time, to establish a Just Transition Mechanism. Given the increasing recognition of just transition in NDCs, countries' priorities and targets can provide a guide for advancing this agenda.

This event aims to raise the profile of just transition within NDCs and explore how countries are prioritizing and implementing just transition commitments within their climate action. The event is aimed at decision-makers operationalizing their NDCs as well as international and local partners engaging in these processes and supporting inclusive NDC implementation.

The event will feature high-level speakers and lay out the state of play of just transition in NDCs and implementation issues. A discussion with country representatives and just transition stakeholders will highlight some of the implementation challenges and opportunities faced, how they are being addressed, and what support will be necessary to deliver on just transition commitments.
