The world is now set to at least temporarily exceed the 1.5°C target laid out in the Paris Agreement – as confirmed by UNEP's recent "Limiting Overshoot" report. While it has long been clear that carbon dioxide removal (CDR) will be needed to meet global net-zero goals, exceeding a the 1.5°C threshold means that CDR must also be used to achieve net-negative emissions and bring global temperatures back down to safer levels.

The Group of Negative Emitters (GONE) - a coalition of eight countries with capacity and coordination support from WRI - is increasing political ambition toward net negative and guiding countries to advance the policies needed to achieve it.

During this event, GONE and collaborating countries will emphasize the importance of net-negative emissions and outline plans to build momentum for achieving it.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme
  • H.E. Samira Nawa, Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities, Denmark
  • H.E. Bereket Fesehatsion, Minister of National Strategy, Ethiopia
  • Moderated by World Resources Institute
