Urban Greening: Moving from Practice to Policy
Urban Greening has gained traction in recent decades as a response to a range of urban challenges, including climate emissions, urban heat, public health, and biodiversity. Much attention has been paid to the benefits of urban NBS and urban greening, but less attention paid to the how-to. How can a city implement NBS equitably? How does a city finance urban greening initiatives? What are the best ways to ensure greening is integrated into long-term planning and policies, rather than left as one-off pilot projects?
WRI, under its Green-Gray Infrastructure Accelerator, is bringing together expert practitioners from across the continent to answer these questions and offer insights into real-world examples of successful urban greening. The webinar will feature experts from Johannesburg, South Africa; Bukavu, DRC; and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia sharing insights from their work and offering best practices for other cities looking to integrate urban greening into their long-term resilience plans. Each guest will describe a greening initiative in their city and how these initiatives have driven policy changes toward long term climate resilience.
This webinar is the first in a three-part series on policy, diving into the policy landscape of NBS in Africa and sharing best practices and lessons learned on integrating NBS and Green-Gray Infrastructure into lasting policies toward more resilient cities.
This webinar is part of WRI Africa’s Green-Gray Infrastructure Accelerator Webinar Series, which draws on the experience of Cities4Forests, Urban Water Resilience, and partners from across the continent to illuminate best practices for planning, financing, implementing and institutionalizing natured-based solutions for urban climate resilience.
