CBAM, Green Procurement, and the Importance of Product-level Emissions Standards for Industrial Decarbonization Policy

Product-focused efforts to mitigate GHG emissions — such as green procurement programs, carbon-based tariffs, and building codes requiring the use of low-carbon products — can be powerful tools for governments and companies in achieving their climate targets.

From policies like the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to efforts aimed at procuring industrial products with lower carbon footprints, we see product-based decarbonization policies gaining traction globally. Amidst this international policy landscape, determining the “embodied” greenhouse gas emissions of an industrial product in a consistent, credible manner is more important than ever.
